What is an Amsler Grid?

An Amsler Grid is useful self-check tool that you can use at home to monitor changes in your central vision for macular diseases, it is a card that shows a grid pattern on a white background with a dot in the centre.

If performed correctly and regularly, it can help detect subtle changes within the macula, and lead to significantly improved visual outcomes in conjunction with timely treatment.

How often to use an Amsler Grid

While the Amsler grid is a quick sight test that you can do daily, you should not rely on it for diagnosis, and we recommend you pair your daily self-checks with regular eye examinations with your Optometrist or Ophthalmologist.

How to use an Amsler Grid

Step 1:

Hold the chart at approximately 30 cm and ensure you use your optimal refractive correction for reading (either reading glasses – ideally single vision, contact lenses or no correction required).

Step 2:

Cover one eye and use the open eye to focus on the black dot in the middle of the grid, noting the regular lines and squares.

Step 3:

Cover the other eye and repeat the test.

Step 4:

If the lines appear to be wavy, broken, dim, or fuzzy, or if squares appear warped and distorted, you should schedule an eye exam with an eye health professional urgently.

While the Amsler Grid is useful tool that can help detect vision problems resulting from damage to the macula (the central part of the retina) or the optic nerve, it should not substitute regular eye examinations with your eye health professional.
